Wild Excerpt: The Beginnings Of A 1,100-Mile Hike

Cheryl Strayed hiked about 1,100 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail alone when she was just 26. We interviewed her about how the experience helped her cope with her mother’s early death, but her new memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail , puts into words an almost unimaginable journey. This excerpt from…

Fish Night : cooking for the family

Here is another of my super simple and tasty meals that can be made well even if there are interruptions, which with a house of kids is about as common as an avocado going bad before you use it ( … Continue reading →

There are few things in this world that make you feel as good as chocolate does. I’m sure there are some fabulous prescription drugs and yoga chants I could try instead, but those sound A. expensive and B. Like I might have to sweat. Chocolate is relatively inexpensive, easily accessible…

Oh, the Inhumanity of it all…

I, Penny, the WonderPup, have many talents. One of them is balancing random items on my head while my annoying family takes pictures for the internet. Even worse, my family makes me “stay” before I can chew on that bone they’re holding hostage… A…

Just what I needed…

Just what I needed…

I really needed today’s event. It’s been a crazy couple of days with lots going on and it was nice to be at the Whirlpool media event without having to be in charge of anything or anyone. All I had to do was enjoy myself and pay attention in between the delicious food they served us. (I am…

It hurts.

I have piles of parenting books. PILES and piles of them. Some that I bought when I was newly pregnant for the first time. They were eagerly read in 1999, occasionally thumbed through in 2002, and really haven’t been touched since. I picked one up the other day to see if they cover …

I Worry About This One

I’m struggling with this one. She doesn’t know if she wants to be a baby or a big girl. She hit 18 months last Saturday and in my humble opinion, she is way too old to be nursing ten times a day!  I generally wean my little ones at about 15 months, but since she may be my…

Drive-Thru Diagnosis?

I don’t generally pontificate on news stories. But when a news story such as the piece on autism in Time Healthland airs, I cannot contain my words. Did you read it? Read it. All done? Ok. So, we can diagnose a kid as autistic in 5 minutes? We can accurately label a child as autistic in just 5 minutes? With just one…

Seeds of Change Kids Garden Starter Kits Make Family-Friendly Gardens!

We are a bit behind on our seed starting this year, I know.  Thankfully, it was made a bit easier and family-friendly this year with the Seeds of Change Kids Garden Starter Kits.  We had the children try their hand at starting watermelon plants with the ready-to-start kits, now available at Walmart…

The oven is my beetbox and I just ordered a pizza. Good Friday, indeed.

It feels like Saturday, doesn’t it? It does. This morning I hung out at the hospital while my mom had surgery on her ankle. (Necrotic tissue, bone spurs, ice machine and elevation for a week, you get the picture. All is now well, although she got really sick to her stomach right after I left.
